Septic System Cost - What To Expect
When it comes to any type of septic system, cost is a huge factor. And I'm not only speaking of the costs for purchasing a septic tank. You also have maintenance, repair and even replacement costs to consider as well. With that said, here is a look at septic tank prices and other related expenses.
Septic Tank Cost
Generally speaking, you will have 3 basic options when looking at a new septic system.
- Standard system - A basic trench septic system that is gravity based with run from as low as $2500 all the way up to $10,000, depending on what area of the country you live in.
- Cluster system - This is when you have a shared drain field with other homes in the area. The cost can go from a low of $4,000 up to $7,500 and above.
- Engineered system - You are looking at a septic system cost of $5,000 and up to $20,000 for these types of systems.
Septic System Maintenance Costs
Naturally, every septic tank system will have maintenance and repair costs to maintain its use. A new drain field can cost from $25, while a mound system with new pump can run upwards of $400-$600.
Pumping and inspection costs will generally range from $100-$200.
Compared to the costs of connecting to a public sewer system, septic tanks are much lower. With proper upkeep and maintenance, new septic systems will last 20-50 years.
The real key is keeping the system maintained. Septic system failure is not only costly, but it can be deadly. Over 1,200 people die each year because of failed systems and contaminated water.
